Voir notamment l’article suivant : Rivers, William, « The Repression of War Experience », The Lancet, n° 4927, 02/02/1918, pp. 173-177.
Barker, Pat, The Eye in the Door, Londres, Penguin Books, 1993, p. 127 : « the unreflecting admiration of courage ».
Showalter, Elaine, The Female Malady : Women, Madness and English Culture (1830-1980), Londres, Virago, 1985, pp. 170-171 : « There were […] social expectations of the masculine role in war ».
Ibid., p. 169 : « This parade of incapacitated men was in itself a shocking contrast to the heroic visions and masculinist fantasies that had preceded it ».
Barker, Pat, Regeneration, op. cit., p. 04 : « cowards, shirkers, scrimshankers and degenerates ».
Ibid., p. 66 : « rubbish ».
Showalter, Elaine, The Female Malady : Women, Madness and English Culture (1830-1980), op. cit., p. 174 : « The war, to which so many men had gone in hope of becoming heroes, ended up emasculating them ».
Barker, Pat, Regeneration, op. cit., p. 108 : « The war that had promised so much in the way of “manly” activity actually delivered “feminine” passivity ».
Ibid., p. 48 : « But they were still expected to do their duty and return to France ».
Shephard, Ben, A War of Nerves : Soldiers and Psychiatrists (1914-1994), Londres, Pimlico, 2001, p. 18 : « They were military doctors, there to “conserve the fighting strength”, to help win the war ».
Barker, Pat, Regeneration, op. cit., p. 15 : « I can’t pretend to be neutral ».
Ibid., p. 4 : « [They] don’t believe in shell-shock ».
Barker, Pat, Regeneration, op. cit., p. 224 : « The removal of the physical symptom was described as a cure ».
Showalter, Elaine, The Female Malady : Women, Madness and English Culture (1830-1980), op. cit., p. 178 : « therapy and punishment ».
Barker, Pat, Regeneration, op. cit., p. 231 : « You must speak, but I shall not listen to anything you have to say ».
Ibid., p. 145 : « At times like this the lack of privacy was almost intolerable ».
Foucault, Michel, Surveiller et punir, Paris, Gallimard, 1975, p. 160.
Ibid., p. 159.
Ibid., p. 269.
Barker, Pat, Regeneration, op. cit., p. 238 : « the business of controlling people ».
Ibid., p. 238 : « self-destructive ».
Nous parodions ici volontairement le titre de l’ouvrage de John Langshaw Austin : Quand dire, c’est faire (How to do Things with Words).
Barker, Pat, Regeneration, op. cit., p. 249 : « If anything, he was amused by the irony of the situation, that he, who was in the business of changing people, should himself have been changed ».
